Hey there,
In light of a new term, the possibility of new members and the need to develop a strong sense of fundamentals, we're going to offer a couple of exciting new experiences this term.
First, we're going to warm up with something anyone who has taken a martial art class will recognize: flow drills. This is going to be a sword-specific exercise that concentrates on the major guards, cuts and footwork developed by masters like Fiore, Talhoffer and Ringneck as well as modern masters of the armed fighting techniques found in Kali/Arnis/Escrima (using interpretations by Forte Swordgroup).
This will be a mere fifteen minutes or so at the beginning of practice to get the blood flowing and develop a better sense of edge alignment and timing.
After that fighting resumes as normal.
Following, dependent on interest, I'll be forming a WMA study group that will start working on the knightly art of longsword. In spring, maybe we will shift to backsword/buckler, staff and/or spear. The study group will NOT be sparring at first, instead working on cuts, guards, winds, binds and grapples.
If you're interested in WMA study, let me know via email (cottc [at] pdx [dot] edu) or practice.
