Winter Quarter Foamsmithing 101

Postby Hans on Sun Jan 06, 2008 5:05 pm

Hey all,

When is the best day/time for a Foamsmithing event? Usually we do it on a Sunday, all day. I would like to make sure everyone who wants to make a weapon has a chance, so make sure to let me know if there are any days which are not good as well.

Also, what do we want to focus on? There are definitely some weapons needing repair, sheilds could be safer, more flails, etc... Your thoughts?

I'll try to unhook whatever Sunday you place it into...that's my band practice day, though, so if there's a show coming up, I might not be able to do it.

The shields could probably stand to have a ring of closed-cell lining the back along the place where the rim foam meets the core. Maybe put glue on the bolts (elmers is fine) and screw them on tight, then liberally cover them in duct tape to prevent some of the incidental contact injuries we've seen.

We should consider building flails after the model used by NERO. They're more like the real thing. To use the Bel flail, you pretty much have to haft people, and the user always thinks they've hit their opponent even when the ball bounces harmlessly off the inside of a shield.

That's my 2 cents.

p.s. I'm on campus now and am able to access this forum.

I'm cool with just hanging out fixing stuff like I did last time. I may bring in my barrel mace and fix it also, but I have mostly given up on my sword...maybe I'll make a new one of those.

Flails are not very usable in this sport. The problem is they don't work very well at all, like the belegarth flail, or they are actually dangerous. They are fun to goof around with occasionally, but I wouldn't recommend spitting out a ton of them.

P.S. I was at the beach this past weekend, but I should be at most of the practices from now on. See you guys Saturday=)
